Bessie's 1900-1908 diary is transcribed below from a typescript, without access to the original manuscript. Mysteriously, the typist typed the diary with very little punctuation (much less than Bessie used in the manuscript transcribed above), which I've attempted to restore. A copy of both diaries is held at the Southern Oregon Historical Society Research Library, M24, Box 3.

    Friday, June 1, 1900--Lester commenced to cut alfalfa, Ray hoeing beans and helping Lester. I worked in garden. I took Ray down to [Hosmer] ranch in eve.
    Saturday, June 2, 1900--Lester cutting alfalfa. Ray went to Medford. I worked in garden, cooking, put house in order, took off a cap of honey. Lester helped me hive a swarm of bees.
    Sunday, June 3, 1900--Ed came and helped Lester finish cut hay. Boys all went in swimming. I took Ed down in eve. Ray walked from G.H. this morning. Albert was up. Mary & Fred was up in evening.
    Monday, June 4, 1900--Boys cultivated corn. I put out washing, busy all day, straightened my closet.
    Tuesday, June 5, 1900--Boys raked hay & put it up. I ironed, put home in order.
    Wednesday, June 6, 1900--Boys cultivating corn. I made a cake, irrigated garden. Mama walked up this morning. I sewed on her dress.
    Thursday, June 7, 1900--Boys cultivating corn and potatoes. I partly finish one dress and cut out another. Took Mama home this eve. [illegible] and I hived a swarm of bees.
    Friday, June 8, 1900--Boys cultivating corn, beans. Pearl and Babe came up, we lined and papered the bedroom. I am tired and not feeling well. Ray gone to the ranch.
    Saturday, June 9, 1900--Lester cultivating potatoes and beans. Pearl and I papered the sitting room. Grant came up, Mrs. Martin and teacher was up. I feel bad with cold.
    Sunday, June 10, 1900--Jo helping Lester haul hay. Ed and Ray brought up Midge and a nice calf. Started in to cut hay and broke down. I put room in order.
    Monday, June 11, 1900--Lester and Ray cutting hay. I put room in order, busy all day, set out some plants. I sewed carpet all day.
    Tuesday, June 12, 1900--Boys cutting & raking hay. I finish carpets. Pearl was up. I do not feel well.
    Wednesday, June 13, 1900--Boys cooking hay. I put out washing, picked berries
, busy all day. Cloudy, looks like rain.
    Thursday, June 14, 1900--Boys helped me put down two carpets. Fearful by [bad?] rain all day. Cloudburst in evening, washed away lots of stuff. Ed came up in eve. 
[illegible] was up. Our crops are about ruined.
    Friday, June 15, 1900--Still it rains. Lester out looking after things. It is terrible to see everything laid to waste. Ed, Lester, Ray & I went to the ranch in afternoon.
    Saturday, June 16, 1900--Lester cut wood, choring, spread out hay and helped Jo butcher a mutton in eve. Ed & Ray gone to Medford. I ironed, sorted papers, finished putting things in order. Busy all day. Showery.
    Tuesday, June 19, 1900--Charley came this afternoon.
    Wednesday, July 11, 1900--Charley started for Castella this morning, Ray took him as far as the ranch.
    Tuesday, August 7, 1900--Ray and I went to Jacksonville and Medford. This was Ray's last trip to see the doctor. [Ray's eyes were being treated by Dr. Pickel.]

1905

    Friday, December 29, 1905--Ed and Lester brought up 14 head of sheep from Hosmer.
    Sunday, December 31, 1905--Ray and I took Mrs. Farmer and Alta to the ranch. Lester came down. Ed is cleaning ditch for Grant, Jo working at tunnel. Cold and freezing, 7
½ inches snow.

1906


    Monday, January 1, 1906--Lester tacked his grimeboots [gumboots?]. Ray went to the party at Grandma's. I was busy all day at various things. Freezing all day.
    Tuesday, January 2, 1906--Lester finished his book and went to Hosmer. Ray and I put out two weeks' wash
. Ray scrubbed the kitchen for me. All our cattle are in. I helped Ray with feeding cattle. Foggy and moderating.
    Wednesday, January 3, 1906--Ray feeding and choring. I put house in order, sewed some, looked after things in general. Jo came this evening. Foggy and cold.
    Thursday, January 4, 1906--Ray done feeding and went over to Walters'. Jo went to work at tunnel. I was alone all day, looked after everything, helped Ray feed in evening. Not very well this morning
. Foggy and cold.
    Friday, January 5, 1906--Ray helped Herman & Johnson up the hill with a car. Oiled the harness & choring. I sacked sausage, cooking, busy all day. Foggy and cold.
    Saturday, January 6, 1906--Ray feeding and choring. I put out ironing and we went down to ranch in afternoon. All is well
. Cold & freezing.
    Sunday, January 7, 1906--I cleaned & put house in order, put sausage to smoke
. Ray writing letters & choring & feeding. Jo was up. Clear & cold.
    Monday, January 8, 1906--Ray feeding & choring. Lester came home. Hugh was up. I churned, molded up butter, looked over some apples, trimmed blackberries
. Ray mended broke wagon. Change in weather.
    Tuesday, January 9, 1906--Lester & I went to Gold Hill
. Ray stayed to home, had good supper for us this evening. Long, hard drive. Raining most all day.
    Wednesday, January 10, 1906--Lester went to Birdseye Creek. I put out washing
. Ray & I washed & oil the harness. Busy all day. Snow is going. Foggy & warm.
    Thursday, January 11, 1906--Ray and I went to the ranch for dinner. In the afternoon we all walked over to Birdseye Creek to see the boys mine. Mrs. Farmer and Alta came home with us. Jo went to Applegate. Windy and looks like rain. A pair of twin lambs this morn.
    Friday, January 12, 1906--Ray choring. I put out ironing. I mending, Pet sewing Alta a dress. Lester came up this evening. Raining hard all day, snowing this eve.
    Saturday, January 13, 1906--Ray went hunting and after the mail. Charley came back with him. I made squash pies, cooking, helped Pet with Alta's dress. Alta practicing music. Lester worked in mine. 7
½ inches of snow, cold & foggy.
    Sunday, January 14, 1906--Pet made candy, I popped corn
. Ray choring in eve. Found Spot down. Charley, Lester & Ray got her down the hill and took her to the wagon shed, covered her over good and she got up all right. Quite a time, snowy and cold.
    Monday, January 15, 1906--Lester worked one half day, then took clothes to Ed. C. F. went down. I busy cooking, doing housework, looking after things
. Ray choring. Sanders was up. Pet sewing. Raining hard and water is raising.
    Thursday, January 16, 1906--Lester up in night looking after water and worked in claim all day. C. F. brought up mail. Pet sewed on Alta's dress. I baked bread, busy all day. Ray choring. Snowing most all day.
    Wednesday, January 17, 1906--Lester working in claim, Ray choring. Farmer family went home, walked down. I sewed on waist, busy all day. Mindy Lance was up this afternoon. Snowing this eve.
    Thursday, January 18, 1906--Lester working in mine

    Friday, January 19, 1906--Lester worked half day and went coon hunting

    Saturday, January 20, 1906--Lester worked half day, then went to Hosmer. I put out washing and cleaning

    Sunday, January 21, 1906--Ray and I visited Mrs. Morris and Minnie. Lester came home. Snow is melting, cloudy & cold.
    Monday, January 22, 1906--Lester worked 
½ day. Ray hauling manure and getting ready to go to G.H. I was busy all day, getting potatoes, apples & cabbage & etc. ready. Warmer, sunshine some.
    Tuesday, January 23, 1906--Ray and I went to Gold Hill. Lester run the ranch, had a pleasant day. After all our freight came Sanders was up to get his freight. Snow is melting fast. Found everything all right.
    Wednesday, January 24, 1906--Lester working in mine
. Ray choring, laying up fence. I put house in order, cooking, busy all day, put out my ironing. A little lamb this eve. Pleasant day.
    Thursday, January 25, 1906--Lester at work. Ray choring and went after mail. I baked bread, busy all day at various things. Worked with lamb to get it to suck

    Friday, January 26, 1906--Lester at work. Ray went to Gold Hill. I finished off some sewing, cooking
, busy all day. Pearl and Pet came up in afternoon. Alta & Juanita stayed overnight. We all slept upstairs. Lovely day, frosty night.
    Saturday, January 27, 1906--Lester at work, Ray choring & laid up fence. I gave Alta music lesson. I took the girls home in afternoon horseback. I went on after mail, stopped a while at Pet's. Pleasant day.
    Sunday, January 28, 1906--Lester at work. Ed came home this morning. We washed the meat and ready to hang up. Ed and Ray went down to Lance's claim. I made candy. Pleasant day.
    Monday, January 29, 1906--Ray went to Grants Pass. Lester at work. Ed cleaning barnyard, looking after sheep. I washed, sewed in afternoon. Ed hung up meat. Ed's birthday, 24 years. Lovely day.
    Tuesday, January 30, 1906--Lester at work. Ed went after sawdust. I put out ironing. Looking after little lambs, had six come, one dead, day hectic, busy all day
. Ray came home. Pleasant.
    Wednesday, January 31, 1906--Ed gone to Birdseye Creek. Lester at work, Ray choring and getting in carrots and beets. I put house in order. Pruned blackberries and helped Ray with carrots. Warm, nice day.
    Thursday, February 1, 1906--Lester at work. Ray and I pruned on berries
. Ray went after mail. I went after sheep, two more little lambs, 10 lambs in all. Am tired tonight. Very pleasant.
    Friday, February 2, 1906--Lester at work. Ray and I finished blackberries. I put quilt in framer. Pleasant day.
    Saturday, February 3, 1906--Lester at work. Ray choring and busy. I baked
, busy all day, looked after sheep. Lester went to ranch this eve. Pleasant day.
    Sunday, February 4, 1906--Ray went after mail. Lester came home this eve. I read and rested today, not very well. Very nice day.
    Monday, February 5, 1906--Lester worked 
½ day. Ray cleaning around the barn, 14 little lambs. I baked bread, busy all day.
    Tuesday, February 6, 1906--I took Ray to Gold Hill in buggy. Lester choring. Alta & Jo came home with me. I am tired

    Wednesday, February 7, 1906--Lester worked. Ed came home this morning. Jo done the feeding. I fussed with a little lamb but it died. Alta practicing music. Lovely day.
    Thursday, February 8, 1906--Lester at work. Ray came home this eve. Mrs. Farmer walked up this morning. I put out a big washing. Ed plowing where the old barn stood. C. H. came this eve, we all sat up and watched the [lunar] eclipse. Lovely day.
    Friday, February 9, 1906--Charley and Ed pruning orchard. Ray went down to take Mama to G. Hill. I looked after little lambs, cooking, busy all day. Gave Alta m[usic] lesson. Pet made a cake. Ed went after sheep, failed to find five

    Saturday, February 10, 1906--Ed and Lester drove off cattle and looked for sheep, never found them. Ray came home this morning. Pet helped me with ironing. I made doughnuts
. Another little lamb. Charley not very well.
    Sunday, February 11, 1906--Charley and Ray prospecting. Jo came up. Ed & Lester looking for sheep, found them in barley. I went as far as Mrs. Morris with Pet and Alta on their way home

    Monday, February 12, 1906--Pet and I drove to G. Hill. Ed and Lester went to G.P
. Ray stayed and looked after things by himself. I took supper with C. & Pet stayed all night with Mama. We had a fine day.

    Wednesday, March 7, 1906--Ed and Ray cutting wood. Lester at work 
½ day. I put out a big wash, went down home in afternoon horseback Lester churned. I dressed 2 chickens in eve. Pleasant. Sheep gone back down, 5 head.
    Thursday, March 8, 1906--Lester worked 
½ day and helped Ed cut wood. Ray and I went to Gold Hill. Juanita & Alta came home with us, took dinner with Pet. Lovely day.
    Friday, March 9, 1906--Lester working, Ed plowing, Ray splitting wood. I ironed

    Saturday, March 10, 1906--Lester worked in claim. Ed finished plowing

    Sunday, March 11, 1906--I took the girls home in a snow storm
. Ray & Lester went to ranch. Ed visited Sanders. Ed & Lester cut a tree out of the road. I spent the day with Pearl. Mama came home. Snowing all day.
    Monday, March 12, 1906--Lester worked 
½ day then went hunting. Ed went to look after cattle, Ray choring. I baked bread, busy all day. About two inches of snow and very cold.
    Tuesday, March 13, 1906--This has been a cold snowy day, 7
½ inches on the ground. Lester gone to look after cattle. This is bad on cattle. I am setting a quilt together. Ray choring and reading. Down to 26 this morning.
    Wednesday, March 14, 1906--Ray went after the mail. I have been by myself all day. Clear tonight. Lester came home this eve
. Another little lamb. Snow about 10½ inches.
    Thursday, March 15, 1906--Lester gone to help Grant
. Ray choring and making a gate. I sewed on my quilt, looked after sheep, found only three. Cold last night, down to 20 this morning. Some of my flowers froze.
    Friday, March 16, 1906--Ray choring. I sewed on quilt
, busy all day. Sanders was up. Lester came home the eve. Last night was the coldest of the season, 14 above zero.
    Saturday, March 17, 1906--Lester working today
. Ray choring and busy. I put house in order, cooking, finished my quilt. Another cold [day,] down to 20, everything is killed. I made 5 lbs. of nice soap.
    Sunday, March 18, 1906--Lester and Ray went to the ranch. I stayed to home, looked after cow, she had a calf this morning
. Cold and snowy all day.
    Monday, March 19, 1906--Lester at work, Ray choring. I put out washing and drove the sheep home. Jo and Sanders was up. Raining, another little lamb, 22 now.
    Tuesday, March 20, 1906--Ray choring and busy at other work. I looked after sheep. Not feeling well today. Ed & Lester come home tonight

    Wednesday, March 21, 1906--Ed and Ray hanging the new gate. Lester at work. I ironed, baked bread

    Friday, March 23, 1906--Ed took Lester's place in claim. Ray plowing in flat. I looked after sheep, cooking, busy all day. Cloudy & showery.
    Saturday, March 24, 1906--Ed sowed grain & alfalfa in flat. Lester better & gone to work. I done Sat. work and went down home in afternoon. The road is very bad

    Sunday, March 25, 1906--Lester went grouse hunting
. Ray went to the Hosmer ranch. Ed pruning orchard and after sheep. I baked bread and rested. Pleasant.
    Monday, March 26, 1906--Ed pruning orchard, Lester mining
. Ray came home this eve. I looked after sheep, put upstairs in order, busy all day. Ray's birthday 20 years old. Cloudy.
    Tuesday, March 27, 1906--Ed & Ray pruning trees, Lester mining. I put out my washing, kept the lambs up, wrapped some cherry trees. This has been a nice day.
    Wednesday, March 28, 1906--Ed and Ray pruning orchard. I ironed, baked crackers. Lester mining. I set out strawberry [plants]

    Thursday, March 29, 1906--Ed & Ray pruning trees, Lester at work. I baked bread, set out straw.b. plants and went after sheep. Minnie & Cecil was up.
    Friday, March 30, 1906--Ed choring, set out pear tree. Lester mining

    Saturday, March 31, 1906--Lester mining part of day
, Ray choring. Ed & I started for the funeral and came back. Ed then went down to Grant's. Cold & snowy all day.
    Sunday, April 1, 1906--Ray and I attended Haymond's funeral. Lester was down to ranch. Ed at work for Grant. Cold and snowing.
    Monday, April 2, 1906--Lester at work, Ray choring. I am not feeling well. Showery.
    Tuesday, April 3, 1906--Lester worked half day and cleaned chicken house
. Ray working at barn. I was busy all day, pruned some peach trees. Ed came up. Nice day.
    Wednesday, April 4, 1906--Lester at work. Ed & Ray pruning orchard. I picked wool, baked bread, busy all day

    Thursday, April 5, 1906--Lester at work. Ed & Ray pruning orchard. I put out my washing. Ray drove in Goldie with a little calf, all of our cattle was up for salt. The pig came home.
    Friday, April 6, 1906--Lester at work. Ed & Ray working in orchard. I ironed, set out strawberry [plants,] looked after sheep. Ed killed a grouse & squirrel

    Saturday, April 7, 1906--Ed & Ray finished pruning the orchard. Lester worked half day, then went to G.H. I put house in order, set out plants. Charley, Pet & Alta walked up this morning. This is Alta's birthday 9 years old. We killed and dressed the gobbler, weighed 20 lbs. Lovely day.
    Sunday, April 8, 1906--All the boys went hunting but Ray. Pet & I cooked a fine dinner in honor of Lester and Alta's birthdays. The turkey was fine. They went home in a rain in the evening. I played music for the boys in eve.
    Monday, April 9, 1906--Lester at work. Ed & Ray burning brush. I sprayed strawberry bed, currants & gooseberries and set out plants. Grant & Pearl drove up in afternoon

    Tuesday, April 10, 1906--Ed went down to help Grant today. Lester working
. Ray choring and went down to Mintie's after plants. I finished setting out berry bed, churned, molded out butter and packed eggs. Cloudy & windy.
    Wednesday, April 11, 1906--Lester mining. Ed & I went to G.H. after line & pump
. Ray keeping house. I stayed with Mama, she is very sick with the grippe. Alice is home. Lovely day.
    Thursday, April 12, 1906--Mama is much better. Pearl brought me as far as the [trash] dump. Ed & Ray hung the gate and getting ready to spray. Lester went hunting today

    Saturday, April 14, 1906--Lester mining. We are busy spraying, the pump does not work very well

    Sunday, April 15, 1906--Ed went grouse hunting. Lester went to the ranch, they drove up 5 sheep and a little lamb

    Monday, April 16, 1906--Lester worked half day. Ray, Herman & Augusta came over. Ed & I cultivated strawberry [plants]. I cooked dinner, gave Herman seed potatoes

    Tuesday, April 17, 1906--I cooked spray. Ed & Ray worked with pump it won't work Lester and I took it down to have Hosmer see it and he fixed it Ed went down after sheep one gone

    Wednesday, April 18, 1906--We sprayed all day, Lester mining. Jo came over for breakfast. The sheep came home this morning this morning. San Francisco was shaken down by an earthquake something awful. Very warm.
    Thursday, April 19, 1906--We finished spraying the orchard. Lester at work. I am tired. Jo was up. Very warm.

When they got up there they found Wooldridges' sheep instead of their own, a good joke on them. Ray found our sheep in Bailey Gulch. Augusta and I picked 4 gallons of blackberries in the morning, in the afternoon we made a little quilt.

    Thursday, September 20, 1906--Ed and Lester spent the day down at the claim talking business. Ray came home from Grants Pass. Augusta and I picked prunes, ironed, packed pears, cooked dinner for the boys but never came and then got ready to go to Gold Hill next day. A.W. Sanders and Charley Anderson were up, had music.

. Ray stayed home, and in the afternoon he came down to Hosmer's in buggy and brought Augusta home. Ed, Lester and I got to the Hosmer ranch at 10 o'clock at night and stayed there.

    Wednesday, September 26, 1906--Ray and Augusta took a ride to the ranch, Lester went to the ranch after a block, Ed and Lester hauled hay all afternoon. Had fried chicken for dinner. In the afternoon. I went down as far as Minnie Lance's with Charley Anderson on his way home. Augusta came to meet me.

    Monday, October 1, 1906--Augusta and I canned prunes, beans, tomatoes, piccalilly and peaches,. I got supper and made yeast. Ray got pitch, burned thistles and did chores. Ed and Lester commenced work in the claim. In the evening Augusta went down to the claim to watch the boys mine.

, put out washing. Augusta made beds. In the afternoon we started for Humbug, had a great time going in the rain. As wet as rats when we got there. Was glad to see us.

    Saturday, May 30, 1908--Boys all started early for G.H. Ray went on [to] Medford with teacher. I baked bread
, put out ironing, put house in order. Fleda & Frank Wooldridge came over, also Juanita this eve. They helped me with chores. Windy day.
    Sunday, May 31, 1908--Juanita went home this morning. Ed got home 3 o'clock this morn. I chored. Fleda and Frank went home this afternoon. I busy all day.
    Monday, June 1, 1908--Ed irrigated berries and went to election in a.m. I finished painting woodwork and went to ranch in afternoon. Lester came up this eve.
    Tuesday, June 2, 1908--Ed, Lester and I papered the bedroom, took down lining. We was busy all day
. Cleaning.
    Wednesday, June 3, 1908--Pearl came up this morning. We cleaned and papered the room and put down carpet. It looks very nice. P. went home this eve. Cold day.
    Thursday, June 4, 1908--Ed whitewashed the kitchen and we took out everything and beginning papering. I cleaned woodwork.
    Friday, June 5, 1908--Pearl came up. We finished papering the kitchen, washed windows
, busy all day. Bailey kids came this eve. Ed and I killed a fine mutton.
    Saturday, June 6, 1908--Ed & I went to Gold Hill. Lester stayed to home. Bailey went to Millers. I had a letter from Ray a.m. Tired tonight. Mutton brought 6.10.
    Sunday, June 7, 1908--I put house in order, boys helping me. I have been very busy all day.
    Monday, June 8, 1908--Still busy straightening
. Boys helping, getting ready to cut alfalfa. I set out plants, churned, made yeast, cut alfalfa.
    Tuesday, June 9, 1908--Ed cutting alfalfa. Lester helped me with wash, had a big wash. Ruby & Icey came this eve, we set out tomato plants. Still putting things to rights
. Boys hauled up wood.
    Wednesday, June 10, 1908--Boys putting up hay, girls picking gooseberries. I helped in afternoon, we stemmed in eve. Very warm.
    Thursday, June 11, 1908--Ed putting up hay. Lester went to G.H. Girls went home. I put house in order and busy in garden.
    Friday, June 12, 1908--Ed cutting hay. I put out ironing and irrigating s.b. Grant was up. Replanted w.melons. Lester came up this eve.
    Saturday, June 13, 1908--Lester went to ranch to haul hay. Ed cutting hay. I busy, put upstairs in order, set out plants, planted cabbage & cukes. Aunt Belle drove up this eve
. Warm day. Lester came up this eve.
    Sunday, June 14, 1908--Ed chored & reading. Lester helping Grant with hay. Aunt Belle and I read & rested, looked after irrigating water.
    Monday, June 15, 1908--Lester went over to Layton's. Ed cutting hay
. Aunt Belle and I drove to ranch, attended school meeting. Aunt Belle came home with me this eve.
    Tuesday, June 16, 1908--Ed busy with hay. Aunt Belle and I put out a big wash. I looked after irrigating water. Lester came home this eve with a fine ham of venison.
    Wednesday, June 17, 1908--Boys started to haul hay, Fred Koester helping them
. Aunt Belle and I ironed, baked bread & cookies, walked down the road after a sow and pigs, then drove to the ranch in eve. Stayed all night. Cool & cloudy.
    Thursday, June 18, 1908--I walked home this morn. Ruby helped me up with sow & three little pigs. I mended
, put house in order & irrigated.
    Friday, June 19, 1908--Ed & Lester hauling hay, Koester helping. I busy picking strawberries, Ruby helping me
. Boys butchered mutton in eve, have 8 crates and 10 boxes. Raining this eve.
    Saturday, June 20, 1908--Ed and I took berries and mutton to Hill, sold out
. Rained on us all day, we got back late.
    Sunday, June 21, 1908--I put house in order & rested. Lester went to Hill. Ed choring
. Showery day.
    Monday, June 22, 1908--Ed chored and stuck peas. Lester came and started for Althouse. I picked berries all day. Ed helped half day. We have 9 cr. and four boxes.
